Arachne, a mortal woman gifted in weaving, once challenged the goddess Minerva to a contest to prove who was the better weaver.

 While Minerva depicted the gods performing noble deeds, Arachne boldly created a tapestry showing the gods mistreating humans. Enraged by her audacity, Minerva transformed Arachne into a spider.
