American Museum & Gardens

*They are now closed to visitors until March 2022*

The American Museum takes you on a journey through the history of America, from its early settlers to the twentieth century. With its remarkable collection of folk and decorative arts, the Museum shows the diverse and complex nature of American traditions. The only museum of Americana outside the United States, it was founded to bring American history and cultures to the people of Britain and Europe.

Families

We have lots to offer families visiting the Museum. Family admission ticket, craft and object-handling events during school holidays, Family Explorer backpacks, the chance to dress up as a Pilgrim, Pioneer or Cowboy, interactive touch screens in the American Heritage Exhibition and Folk Art Gallery, plus lots of lawn space for running around!

We accommodate single-width pushchairs throughout the Museum. Unfortunately double buggies are too wide for the narrow doorways in the Museum, so we will ask you to leave these at Reception. Baby pouches and ‘hippy-chicks’ are available to borrow. Please note that some areas of the grounds are steep and not suitable for pushchairs.

Baby-changing facilities are situated in the Exhibition Gallery. Breast-feeding is welcome throughout. The Orangery Cafe has high-chairs and offers children’s lunch boxes (can comprise ½ sandwich, small cookie, pom bears, raisins, drink) or, if preferred, a small portion of hot and cold lunch food. There is a range of cold drinks and ice creams and, for those colder days, hot chocolate with marshmallows or mini-cino.

Local families also benefit from becoming Museum Members; family membership entitles you to visit throughout the year, meeting friends for tea in our cafe, exploring the gardens and grounds, taking part in Family Fun activities, and enjoying our magical Christmas displays. You can keep up to date with Family Fun at the Museum by following us on Twitter and Facebook.
