The Roman Baths

Places to Visit

The Roman Baths is one of the finest historic sites in Northern Europe. It is run by the Heritage Services section of Bath & North East Somerset Council. The Roman Baths, at the heart of the City of Bath World Heritage Site, consists of the remarkably preserved remains of one of the greatest religious spas of the ancient world. The city’s unique thermal springs rise in the site and the Baths still flow with natural hot water.

Visitors can explore the Roman Baths, walk on the original Roman pavements and see the ruins of the Temple of Sulis Minerva. The museum collection, located next to the bathing complex, includes a gilt bronze head of the Goddess Sulis Minerva, and other Roman artefacts. The Roman Baths attracts over one million visitors a year – making it one of the most visited heritage attractions in the United Kingdom.

Visiting with children

The Roman Baths offers a captivating and educational day out for children of all ages. Let us be your guides as you step back in time to discover Roman life. Younger children will love following Hoot the Owl on our activity trails, while those a little older will be fascinated and entertained by our free audioguide designed just for children and read by the wonderful Michael Rosen.

Let them feel the stones beneath their feet as they walk in the shadows of the Romans who once bathed in the Great Bath, while professional guides and costumed characters immerse you all into Roman life. Our projections put Roman life-size characters into the exhibits making you feel like you have travelled back in time. Then wander through the magnificent Temple area and learn about the goddess Sulis Minerva. An experience for all the senses, children over 6 can even taste the waters prized for centuries for curative purposes.

Feeling hungry? We've got food covered too. Why not treat them, and yourself of course, to lunch or afternoon tea in the beautiful Pump Room Restaurant surrounded by Georgian grandeur and atmospheric live music. During the Easter holidays kids can even enjoy a special Easter bunny tea.

If you fancy something a little less grand, The Roman Baths Kitchen offers bistro style food and drink (including a children’s menu) for breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake and dinner in an original Georgian town house directly opposite the Roman Baths.
